Tango Lesson

1997.
Duration: 100 minutes
Directed by Sally Potter.
With: Sally Potter, Pablo Verón, Gustavo Naveira, Fabian Salas, Carlos Copello et al.

Starting from the bars and brothels of the "barrios" of Buenos Aires, tango began its triumph over the world, a triumph of sensuality and passion. In Paris, the English director Sally falls captive to its sensuous and passionate allure through an Argentinean tango dancer named Pablo. They make a deal: he teaches her how to dance tango, and in turn, she makes him a film star. The tango lessons develop into a metaphor not only for the battle between the sexes but also for the rapprochement and confrontation of two individuals from different cultures. Some passages of "Tango Lesson" transmit the impression of a semi-documentary, but it has been thought through in every detail. The fictional reality has many things in common with the lived reality: Sally Potter's own experience gained in the process of learning to dance tango as well as the famous tango dancer Pablo Verón, who embodies Pablo. The result is a very personal and fascinating work with intoxicating images and brilliant color direction

El Ultimo Aplauso

2009.
Duration: 87 minutes.
Directed by German Kral.
With: Cristina de los Ángeles, Inés Arce, Julio César Fernán und dem Orquesta Típica Imperial.

On the outskirts of Buenos Aires, in the tango quarter Pompeya, there was a legendary a legendary bar, "El Chino,” named after its owner, Jorge Garcia, "The Chinese Man". In this bar, the charismatic owner cultivated the original tango and took care of the musicians like a father. When The Chinese Man died, his tango bar died with him. Similar to the style of "Buena Vista Social Club", the Argentinean director German Kral, who has worked together with Wim Wenders, has set out to find the artists who were singing in this bar so many years ago, including great stars such as Cristina de Ángeles , Inés Arce, Julio César Fernández. He finds them in taverns and on the street. Together, they evoke once more the atmosphere of former times for a last applause. This is a powerful documentary about the survival of the tango singer in Argentina's economic crisis, with plenty of authentic music.

El exilio de Gardel

1985.
Duration: 121 minutes.
Directed by Fernando Solanas.
With: Marie Laforêt, Miguel Angel Sola, Philippe Léotard, Georges Wilson, Mariana Vlady et al.

"El Exilio Gardel" is a film of desire for tango, for love and for nostalgia. An Argentinean dance group forced into Parisian exile by the military coup of 1976 is rehearsing a musical show about tango. The film is esthetically impressive, insistently and consistently shaped and characterized by its musical structure. Superb dancing, superb acting skills and the mastery of Astor Piazzolla’s tango music hold the episodes together. One of the core questions of the film is, “How can one get into contact with one’s home without being there?” And one clear answer is: by the culture, by what unites that people and forges a bond between them, even over long distances. This film is definitely a feast for eyes and ears.
